The “what is a ….?” of Stairparts

Glossary of Stairs and Stair Parts
SPINDLES – The vertical posts between Handrails and Baserails. Usually turned in various designs
BALUSTERS – See spindles above. Usually Square or Stop Chamfered
BASERAIL – Rail that runs along to the bottom of the balustrade, holds the spindles in place. Baserail connects to the newel base and the staircase string
HANDRAIL – The rail that runs over the top of the spindles holding them in place at the top. Handrails connect to the Newel Post.
FILLET – These are small pieces of timber that are supplied with our Handrails and Baserails which are cut to size and fitted between the Balusters or Spindles to give equal spacing.
NEWEL POST – Large post that fits to the top and bottom of the stair balustrade. Can be Square, Stop Chamfered or Turned. Sometimes referred to as a Newel Turning
HALF POST – A Newel Post that has been cut down the length to produce a Half Post that fits to the wall on a landing
NEWEL CAP – A Cap that fits on or over the newel post. Can be flat, pyramid or turned design
NEWEL BASE – This is the lower part of the Newel Post assembly which is fitted to the string of the Staircase or to landing joists. Once fitted a Newel Turning or post can be is installed into the Newel Base.
FLIGHT – This is an alternative term used to describe a Staircase.
PITCH – This is the angle of the stairs. Current UK Building allow for a maximum Stair pitch of 45°
PITCH LINE – This is an imaginary line running over the end of each tread of the Stairs.
WINDER FLIGHT – This is a Staircase which turns either 90° or 180° using triangular shaped treads.
WINDER KITE – This is a term which describes one of the triangular shaped treads used on a Winder Flight staircase
SOLID OR CLOSED STRING – Length of wood that encloses the side of the staircase
CUT STRING – Having the profile of the staircase steps visible from the side. Our range of AXXYS stairparts compliment this type of staircase
TREAD – The horizontal timber top of the Staircase step.
RISER – The vertical timber board at back of the Staircase step
