Buy The Right Number Of Stair Spindles

Need to know how many Stair Spindles to buy?

Firstly you need to decide what Style, Design and Timber  of  Balustrade you would like on your stairs. You will need to choose from Contemporary stair parts or Traditional stair parts styles and then choose the design of Newel Posts and Spindles you like and then decide on the Timber Oak, Pine, Hemlock or Dark Hardwood. You can view the entire range by clicking HERE

There is a really simple way to establish how many stair spindles you need to complete your staircase refurbishment project.

The Rake (Up the Stairs)

  1. Count how many steps (treads)  you have.
  2. You need two Spindles per step (Tread)
  3. Take one spindle off for the bottom and one spindle off for the top. You only need one on these steps because the newel post is making up the short fall
  4. Example 11 treads x 2 = 22 spindles less 2 spindles due to top and bottom newel. Total Spindles required = 20 Spindles for the Handrail Rake of the staircase.
  5. You will have to equally space the spindles using the spacer strips (Fillet Strips) which come with the handrail so that the spindles are no wider than 99mm apart. Your staircase will then conform to UK Building Regulations

Landings

  1. Measure the length of the handrail or baserail distance from the top newel to the finishing point in millimetres.
  2. Once you have this landing measurement you need to divide the length by the following
    1. For 41mm spindles divide the length by 121
    2. For 32mm Spindles divide the length by 112
  3. For example
    1. Landing Length = 1600mm divided by 121 = 13.22. You will need 14 x 41mm Spindles
    2. Landing Length = 1600mm divided by 112 = 14.25. You will need 15 x 32mm Spindles
  4. You will then need to space your spindles equally using the fillet strips that come with the handrail with 100mm centres. This will then conform to UK building regulations
